AT&T Smart Wi-Fi is an easy way to save money on your wireless Internet service. It's built right into your DIRECTV or U-verse Wireless Gateway. Once you sign up, you automatically receive a free AT&T Wi-Fi signal at any one of our more than 22 million US hotspots – no sign-up or password necessary.

AT&T Smart Wi-Fi (Rebranded as AT&T Wi-Fi): What does it do?

AT&T Smart Wi-Fi acts as a smart hub, extending your home network allowing you to connect all of your wireless devices throughout your house and yard. It also connects you to our nationwide network of more than 22 million hotspots (U-verse and DIRECTV customers automatically receive the free service at no additional cost). No signup or login is required, just open my Wi-Fi hotspot on any device for instant access.

What are the benefits of using AT&T Smart Wi-Fi?

It's simple – with AT&T Smart WiFi included with your U-verse or DIRECTV service, you get a wireless signal at home plus access to millions of hotspots across the country. It's free and there are no passwords to enter. Just open your Wi-Fi settings on any device and see how many hotspots you can connect to around town.

You can use the AT&T Smart WiFi signal from your Wireless Gateway in your house, but when it comes to taking your devices outside - say for grilling in the yard or simply walking from one room to another - you'll need access beyond the walls of your home. If that's where you want Internet access, then there is an easy way: You can add a device called a Range Extender that picks up the AT&T Smart WiFi signal and repeats the wireless signal throughout your home, yard, or wherever you need it. You can learn more about how it works here.

I have AT&T U-verse Internet at my house. Do I get free access to other hotspots?

Yes! If you subscribe to Internet service from AT&T, you automatically get access to the 22 million+ hotspots across the country for no additional cost. You can connect all of your devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and any other Wi-Fi-enabled device. There are no signup or passwords needed, just open my Wi-Fi on any device and select a nearby hotspot. Your connection will be automatic.

AT&T Smart WiFi and Accessibility Services

If you have a customer account with AT&T Smart WiFi, you will receive an email inviting you to opt into the Customer Multicultural Access Program ("CMAP"). If you are not currently enrolled in this program, please do nothing concerning your enrollment status. If you currently receive access to other AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots due to your home address, then there is no change in eligibility. The purpose of the CMAP program is to ensure that customers with disabilities have a better opportunity to use an AT&T online service.

By opting-in to the CMAP program, you may be provided with free access to certain additional Wi-Fi hotspots located within certain State or county correctional facilities and/or State or Federal Governmental facilities ("Covered Locations"). To get service at a Covered Location, open my Wi-Fi on your device and select "AT&T Smart WiFi." Note: If you have opted in for the CMAP program but wish not to have this additional access, please call AT&T Customer Service and ask about the CMAP program.

What devices work with my free access?

You can use the free access on any Wi-Fi-enabled device – smartphones, tablets, and laptops – as long as they are compatible with 802.11 b/g/n standards. Learn more about how to connect your device to Wi-Fi.

Conclusion

If you have an internet connection from AT&T, then you automatically get their U-verse or DIRECTV customers free access to any of the 22 million+ hotspots across the country; no signup or login required, just open my Wi-Fi hotspot on any device for instant access. If you don't like it and/or don't want to use these additional hotspots in correctional facilities and/or government buildings (although why wouldn't you?), then call customer service and tell them that; they will remove your AT&T Smart WiFi eligibility within 5 business days at most.
